There is something so captivating about pandas it's almost magical. Last year I had the joy of visiting the Panda Exhibit in San Diego California. Hua Mei (the first giant panda born at the San Diego Zoo) stole my heart...and most of the day!
LiChee is a tribute to that that memorable day. She is a sculpted using a very time-consuming technique without the aid of a pattern, scissors, or sewing machine! Indeed, the technique is similar to sculpting with clay...instead of clay, however, wool is used. Beginning with a basic form, a few hairs here and there are added until the piece resembles the picture in my mind. LiChee was created using a combination of wools New Zealand Romney and fine Merino and a very fine, barbed needle that sculpts the wool into place. The process to create LiChee took several days...and ensures she is a one-of-a-kind. As you can see from her portraits, LiChee has those dark eye "shadows" and typical panda coloroing. Her delicate mouth is open, lined in black and she even has a delicate little tongue for sampling preferred bamboo shoots. Her deep-set eyes are hand-blown glass, imported from Germany.
