Lionel was the second needle felted teddy I made. The very first....well, that was my practice piece! Lionel is the bear that made me smile and feel very good about what I was doing! He's that kind of fella!
Lionel is a needle sculpted bear using a very time-consuming technique. There was no pattern, no scissors, no sewing! He was created using New Zealand Romney and luxurious fine merino wool that was sculpted into form using a very fine, barbed felting needle to secure it in place. While the process took several days to complete, the results make it well worth the effort. Lionel is a one-of-a-kind. As you can see from his portraits, Lionel has a contrasting, shaded muzzle, contrasting eyesbrows and shaded inner ears, as well an an open mouth and tonque. His detailing was done literally one hair at a time! His deep-set eyes are hand-blown glass, imported from Germany.
