Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater and His Wife, One-of-A-Kind, $850 (set)
I am so proud to share this unique soft-sculpture representation of the beloved Mother Goose poem, "Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater." This piece has been created exclusively for The Ross Park Zoo TBAI Gallery benefiting the Endangered Species Program.
The set took several weeks to design and create, incorporating a variety of natural fibers including mohair, merino, romney and llama wools, blending them along the way. Both pieces in this set have been sculpted using needle felting techniques. The process begins with wool and a barb needle (as shown in the photo at the left). There are no patterns, no sewing machines, not even a needle and thread. In many ways, the creative expression is similar to clay sculpting, except that I am using wool! I begin with a very basic shape formed from batting (wool or quilt batting) and add a few hairs here, a few hairs there, securing them using a felting needle. It takes several days of poking and prodding, shaping and forming, and literally thousands of pokes and prods. It is really "soft-sculpting" in it's truest form
Peter stands approximately 11-inches. His construction includes wire armature, allowing him to stand freely at his wife's side. His details include deep set antique shoe button eyes (set off by sculpted eye brows!) a contrasting open mouth muzzle...and he even has a tongue! His formal attire was sculpted separately and includes a white shirt with collar and buttons. Peter's formal jacket, with it's high collar, even include a tail! And, of course, his clothing has been meticulously tailored to fit his physique. After completing the individual pieces, they, too, were needle-felted into place.
Peter's beloved wife, of course, lives in a pumpkin shell! Mrs. Pumpkin Eater stands (or should I say "sits") at approximately 9 1/2 inches. I have used various shades of orange to give the pumpkin a realistic look. And, the shell is adorned with pumpkin leaves, each individually needle-felted into place. The "Mrs." had beautiful long tresses, fashioned from hand-dyed mohair fleece...the curls are natural! Like Peter, she has deep set antique shoe button eyes, a beautiful brow line and a contrasting open mouth muzzle with tongue. Topping it off, the Mrs. is wearing her pumpkin cap, also needle-felted.
